This is a sobering reminder to our dear parents to use a mohel (ritual circumciser) that is G0d fearing & follows all of our traditions & Jewish laws without taking any shortcuts.  There are thousands of cases of newborn babies getting circumcision in hospitals or by doctors that claim to be a certified mohel but do not follow the required procedures.   The courage & dedication of Mr. Gabai is commendable but the best thing is to get a kosher bris as a newborn & avoid these procedure altogether.

This is the case in many parts of America including Los Angeles.   Many of these innocent children have to go through revision in different stages of their lives.  Some of these procedures are as simple as drawing a drop of blood, but some entail repeating almost a the entire circumcision.  I am personally contacted daily about this by parents who later realize that the bris or circumcision of their baby does not look right.  Some do not find out until later in life.

Some but not all of the signs that could render a Bris or Brit Milah not kosher:

• No blood during the procedure
• Bris done before day 8 or at night
• Extra foreskin (there are different types of skin that need to be examined to determine if there is a problem)
• A person who performs the bris needs to believe in the ritual as a Mitzva (commandment by Bible) NOT just for health reasons

The best advise for the expecting mothers & parents is to use a mohel that is G0d fearing & strictly follows our traditions as well as common hygienic guidelines.  Circumsion is easiest & best done in the first month of life of the infant.  There are many mohels that are not physicians & do a bris that is surgically superior to a doctor.

A pediatrician, O.B. or urologist that performs circumcision is most often not qualified to perform a kosher bris.  Simply reciting a blessing does not make a circumcision into a Brit Milah.  Furthermore, circumcision done by orthodox mohels is shorter & less painful.  The procedure is about 30 seconds compared to about 15 minutes in the hospital & no painful crushing mechanism or restraint is used.
